Famous bridges walk (1-2 hrs)

The tiny river floating through Sarajevo is called Miljacka. There are some famous bridges over this river so a walk along Miljacka can be very surprising.

Start in the Old Town and walk to the river to the most famous bridge, the Oskar Potiorek Bridge, which is officially called Principov Most.

This Latin Bridge was built in the 16th century but it gained world fame for the infamous Sarajevo assassination. It is precisely from this spot that Gavrilo Princip killed Austro-hungarian Arch-duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sofia in 1914, which triggered the start of World War I. In summer you can make a stop at a terrace along the river in the park next to this bridge.

Then walk further down the river and in front of the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts you will find a wonderful new pedestrian bridge, named Festina Lente. This bridge connects Obala Maka Dizdara to Radiceva Street, which runs to the main Marshal Tito Street. So that could be a great walk back to the Old Town.

Panoramic view of Sarajevo (1-2 hrs)

The best panoramic views of Sarajevo, especially during sunset, can be seen from Zuta Tabija, the Yellow Fortress, just behind the Old Town.

From there you can get an idea how it was when the city was under Siege in the Yugoslav war. During 44 months the Serbs attacked the city from the surrounding mountains.

From Bascarsija, the Old Town, you can walk along the Kovaci Cemetery and go uphill to the Yellow Fortress. The entrance to the viewpoint is free. Many locals go here as well and bring some food and drinks for a picnic.

Tunnel Museum (2 hrs)

Between May 1992 and November 1995, during the Siege of Sarajevo, the Sarajevo Tunnel was constructed by the Bosnian Army to link the city, which was entirely cut-off by Serbian forces, with the Bosnian-held territory on the other side of the Sarajevo Airport.

The remainders of this tunnel and the history can be seen in the Tunnel Museum: Tunel Spasa. The original tunnel was 800 metres long. Nowadays there is only 25 metres left, but it will give you a very good impression of how hard it was to construct and how heavy it must have been to transport food, ammunition, wounded people and much more through this tunnel.

The museum is open everyday from 10 am to 5 pm in summer. In winter it closes earlier, the earliest 2 pm. The entrance fee is 10 Bam per person. You can take a taxi from downtown for approximately 17 Bam one way, or you can take tram 3 to the end of the line from the city centre. Then get a taxi to the Tunnel Museum. The address is Tuneli 1 Ilidža.

Vrelo Bosne Park (2-3 hrs)

Vrelo Bosne is the origin of the River Bosna, southwest of Sarajevo. It is one of the country's top natural landmarks and is one of the most famous scenes of natural beauty in the region. A visit to the park is wonderful in every season.

The paths and roads inside the park are ideal for walks and give the visitors the opportunity to take a closer look at the bubbling streams and waterfalls. Outdoor cafés are available offering drinks and snacks but opening times vary from season to season.

To go to Vrelo Bosne, take Tram 3 from Bascarsija. Go to the end of the line at Ilidza. A tram ticket costs 1,60 Bam for one way. You can buy these tickets at a kiosk near most tram stops.
From Ilidza you can walk in a few minutes to Casa Grande. There you can take a horse-carriage, which costs 15 Bam for one way. The entrance fee to the park is 2 Bam.

You can also rent a bike in the park for 3 Bam per hour or 10 Bam per day.

Bascarsija (2-3 hrs)

Baščaršija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural centre of the city. Baščaršija was built in the 15th century when the city was founded.

Tour to Mostar (1-2 days)

A great tour outside Sarajevo is a visit to the graceful city of Mostar along the Neretva River. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of the country’s most recognizable landmarks.

If you are looking for the best view on the bridge, go to the National Monument Mosque and climb the 40-metres high minaret. This costs 8 Bam and is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. And if you are lucky you will see someone jump off the bridge into the river.

Just rent a car and drive to Mostar, which is 129 km southwest of Sarajevo. By car this is a bit more than two hours drive.

You can do this as a daytrip, but if you have enough time you can stay overnight as well and watch the illuminated bridge at night. Of course then you must have dinner at one of the terraces along the river.

Jablanica (2 hrs, in combination with Mostar)

If you drive to Mostar, make a stop in Jablanica as well. Have a look at the bridge that collapsed during the ‘Battle of Neretva’ and visit the museum ‘The Battle for Wounded of Neretva’. The museum is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm and costs 4 Bam per person.

And while driving from Jablanica to Mostar, you will pass by several restaurants along the road that serve the most amazing lamb roast you can get. You will recognize these places by a whole spit roasted lamb outside the place. Just order a portion of lamb with some potatoes and a salad and you’ll taste the pure and honest Bosnian cuisine.
